Franca's Teach the Teacher - Bird Feeding balls - great environmental teaching!

Thank you to Franca's Mum, Beth, for doing so much organising with Franca. We had a wonderful day and showed Mrs Daniel, our Enviro teacher, what we had learned. She was super impressed!

Teach the Teacher in the last 2 weeks!

Felicia teaches us the chemical reaction between vinegar and baking soda as a gradual process. Her assistants were Chantelle and Karol.

Alex makes Gloop with cornflour and water - it was an interesting observation and we can all try it at home!

Leena showed us how to draw traditional Afghani Mehndi patterns on hands. They are used for special occasions like weddings. My pattern was beautiful Leena!

Artifacts from families in our class have really enhanced our research - thank you!!

A pocket watch from the Trembath Family set the tone for the children to collect their own artifacts from home. There is a story behind every object.

Max has collected many cultural artifacts from his Dad's family from The Nederlands. The colours and patterns used on these things was very traditional.

Diamon has brought in an Irish Whistle and his Family Tree to share - it was so interesting to sketch - a big thank you to his Nanny!

Karol has shared her Chinese family photographs. 

Thank you to all the family members who have copied, telephoned, emailed and even skyped their relatives to enable the children to interview and ask for information!

Jack has a very interesting story behind this statue about his Great, Great, Great, Great Grandfather inventing the life jacket (I hope I have the greats right Jack!)

Erin has recently moved here from South Africa and shared a beautiful beaded giraffe statue and a pretty photo of her Mum!

 

Patterns in culture

Hello Terrific 20's whanau and friends
We are beginning our Inquiry into Many Cultures - One land.

I know the children have been researching their families with the Interview Questions they brought home Monday Last Week! They are due by this Friday so that we can begin to use this research in our Inquiry into our own culture. Thank you for helping us in our research.

For Maths this week we will be exploring the patterns that are distinct to different cultures. If you have any examples of these in your home can you please lend them to us for a day? As an example they could be a tablecloth, bowl, scarf, gameboard, picture, tile, tapa cloth, sarong. Please talk about the pattern and write a little description so that your child can read or talk about it with us all. Or if you prefer we would love it if you came into school and described it to us!

We will be learning about patterning, direction, geometry, scale, area, perimeter, rotation, symbolism, making templates and drawing,

Fantastic Longbeach School has sent us a wonderful parcel!

Everyone had a card from the parcel and took turns at placing it in the puzzle. There are imaginative metaphors on the back written by the Year 4 and 5s from Longbeach School. Ms McFarlane's class have done an amazing job! Come and have a look next time you are in R20.

There are lots of comparisons to make to our class - our class is larger, their Iwi is different, their leaf is huge - what kind of tree does it come from?... We certainly see the world differently - for example we learned some facts about cows that we didn't know, and they live near a mountain known for its snow and skiing! What a cool place to live!

GET NEW ZEALAND WRITING!!!

Around 3000 classes are taking part in Get New Zealand Writing and Room 20 is one of them! We have been sent a box with all sorts of things inside to do for our Writing Project. It was very exciting to open it up last week. Inside was also the address of the class we are writing to. We discovered it was a class in Longbeach in the South Island. CAN YOU FIND THIS PLACE ON A MAP OF NEW ZEALAND AND SHOW US AT SCHOOL?

 When we have completed our Found Poetry Art we will send it down south and they will send us their Project. It's like having a Class Pen Pal! We have until next Friday to complete our Writing Project and have it ready to be picked up by courier !! 

Our first task was to find out all sorts of things about ourselves and share them by recording them on the big poster below. We have almost finished it.

Here are our answers so far! 

 Next we had to learn about Metaphors and what they describe when we read or write them.
We read a Poem together called Iain Sharpe and identified the metaphors we read. We drew what we think the metaphors are describing, and the person, and how he looks and acts.

Then we started writing our own poetry about ourselves using the starter  I am a car I ...
You can read these in our Google Docs under Writing.
Next we will choose a favourite line and transfer it to the postcard below:

We will each write a line of our poem, including the metaphor, on the back of a postcard.

Here is the front of the postcard. We must make this super colourful! When all 30 postcards are put together they will read a Found Poem.

 Now back to our class project!

Felicia and Franca are cutting out interesting words from magazines and newspapers to create a Found Poem later.

Tiffany is drawing the weather report for the class at Longbeach School so they can see what the weather is like up here.
