Making maths strategy decisions as a group

Sometimes I can solve a problem in my head by moving numbers around by imagining what they look like. Sometimes I need a strategy to solve a complex problem.

Which strategy do you use to solve a problem? Is it the most efficient? Let's compare to others. The Hexagons Group had a variety of word problems to solve using different operations. They used their own strategies and then worked with others to compare what they had done. They decided on the best strategy between them and recorded it here.

Tinker time this week!

Patience and fine motor skills have been necessary this week for beading! Patterning and planning and a little help from our friends too.!

Makey Makey creativity and innovation in R20 for Tinker Time this week!

Today we began to learn how to create an electrical circuit using crocodile clips and materials such as tinfoil and playdoh - as well as ourselves!

We connected our circuit using a Makey Makey board (sort of a digital circuit board) to a laptop. We opened up Scratch to write some lines of simple code including sounds. When the wires were connected to different parts of the board like up arrow or down arrow and the Earth part of the circuit the sound programmed to activate at that command was played by the computer.

Robert taught the group his Scratch skills and Karol, Quinn and Lucas were able to create the beginnings of their Scratch programme.

Mrs T explained the idea of the circuit and then taught Valentina and Rose how to create a circuit to play on her laptop.

Patterns in culture

We are beginning our Inquiry into Many Cultures - One land.

I know the children have been researching their families with the Interview Questions they brought home Monday Last Week! They are due by this Friday so that we can begin to use this research in our Inquiry into our own culture. Thank you for helping us in our research.

For Maths this week we will be exploring the patterns that are distinct to different cultures. If you have any examples of these in your home can you please lend them to us for a day? As an example they could be a tablecloth, bowl, scarf, gameboard, picture, tile, tapa cloth, sarong. Please talk about the pattern and write a little description so that your child can read or talk about it with us all. Or if you prefer we would love it if you came into school and described it to us!

We will be learning about patterning, direction, geometry, scale, area, perimeter, rotation, symbolism, making templates and drawing,

May the Fourth be with you!

Earlier this month Mrs Trembath surprised our class with a Star Wars themed day! We we learned how to use Hour of code and there is a great Star Wars coding activity to use (there's a LOT of Maths and Logical applications in Coding)! We also invented our own star wars characters and their unique features. We also watched the Google Cardboard Virtual Reality app of a space shuttle taking off into the atmosphere and then trying to land the shuttle pod back in the sea.

The biggest challenge was the Growth Mindset Challenge of having to work your way over 'laser trips' strung across the classroom and tables!

Chapter Chat Matilda activities this week reading meets maths

Here our buddies from R6 are helping us make 3 D shapes like rectangular prisms and pyramids. We decorated them like licorice all sorts - just like in the Miss Trunchbull chapter!
